Write and equation of the line containing the specified point and perpendicular to the indicated line. (4,-2), x=1

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

The challenge is to determine the slope. What slope is perpendicular to x = 1, which is vertical and has no slope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if u want to find the slope of a line that is perpendicular to a line that has no slope. the second line would have a slope of 0. right?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Perfect. So the equation will be "y = something". Do you believe?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, y=0. is there something that im missing? i need to put it into slope intercept form?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Not y = 0. You missed the point you are supposed to hit. Forget about slope intercept form. When m = 0, it's a little confusing. Just write it like you did. That IS slope-intercept form for an horizontal line.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(4,-2) x=1, y would have to be -2 for it to be perpendicular!!! so the equation would be written out as...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i feel im right there, im just missing something

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

y = -2
