How did the existence of the atom bomb ultimately impact U.S.-Soviet relations after World War II?
The atomic bomb was the fist introduction of nuclear weapons in history in that time. And the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan, making massive explosion that shocked many nations including the US on the powers of this nuclear bomb have made. The reason the US did that bomb was to put an immediate end to the war and force japan to surrender with any more fighting. This all happened after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor (the sudden strike by japan against the US). This nuclear bomb was also a message for the Axis powers to prevent them from fighting the US. However, after the Atomic bomb, that’s when the US was seen as the most powerful nation in the world. Well, for foreign relations, the Soviet Union wanted to own nuclear weapons, which got influenced by the US and both china. Furthermore, the allies thought it as an advantage to have a powerful weapon as the atomic bomb for security. Hope i provided u with all the info u need.
Just adding to that, the existence of nukes ultimately created a massive arms race between both the US and the Soviets during the Cold War as both sides continued to raise the ante. Concepts like MAD (mutually assured destruction) were brought up and the world felt like it was balanced on a knife's edge between peace and total annihilation. Nuclear weapons essentially drove much of the fear during that time because now, both the Soviets and the Americans had the power to destroy the world several times over.
