You and two friends visit a pizza shop. There are 14 toppings. 7 toppings are meat and the rest are vegetable. Each of you orders a different topping (no repeats) at random. What is the probability that your group orders only meat toppings? A) 1/35 B) 3432/35 C) 66/7 D) 5/52

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first find the number of ways in which 3 toppings can be selected from 14 toppings of any kin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now find the number f ways in which three meat toppings can be selcted from 7 toppings and hence calc the prob

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

the probability of the 1st person selecting a meat topping is 7/14 or 1/2 so the 2nd person has 1 less meat topping and there is 1 less topping or any type available. find the probability the 3rd person has 2 less meat toppings to choose from and the total number of toppings has decreased by 2. find the probability then the P(meat only) = product of the 3 probabilities

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and thus the prob=C(7,3) / C(14,3) =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

check D

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

nope... a basic rule for probability is that the probability of any event is between 0 and 1

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so that means 2 answers can be eliminated straight away

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so d and b are eliminated then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how come d be eliminated is ans of d >1 ?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

B and C can be eliminated
