What you seem to try to figure out is how to manipulate the figure under the SQRT sign in such a way that you can easily reduce the problem to simpler figures. You need to find out if the figure under the SQRT sign can be split up in 'easy squares', like 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64 and up. In your case: SQRT(147) = SQRT(49 * 3) = SQRT(49)*SQRT(3)=7*SQRT3 It truly helps if you know the square values of the numbers 1 to 10 on top of your head, so you can see how to split the original number in an easy way. Just try this list if you get such a problem.
