Polynomials Help. State the degree of the polynomial. xy + 3x2 – 7 + x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If someone could explain as to how I can figuere this out that would be fantastic.

OpenStudy (uri):

2

OpenStudy (pratyush5):

to find out the the degree of the polynomial just look ate all the powers of the variable . the highest here is x^2 . therefore degree of the polynoliam is 2

OpenStudy (pratyush5):

polynoliam :P lol polynomial* :P

OpenStudy (uri):

ate? at* xD

OpenStudy (pratyush5):

typing error @uri :P

OpenStudy (pratyush5):

happens sometimes :P lol

OpenStudy (uri):

Degree of polynomial is the highest power.. :P which is 3x^2 so 2.

Ahh thanks guys :P

Be careful, because this concerns a polynomial function with two variables. In general the order is the highest order over all variables, so if the example would have been" xy^2 + 3*x^2 -7 +x the total order would be 3 because of the summation of the order of x (=1) and the order of y(=2) in the first term. Usually, the question would be more correct if asked for the order w.r.t. one of the variables. In that case, this example would be order 2 for x (because of 3*x^2) and order 2 for y (due to x*y^2).
