Any ideas?

The first thing you need to is isolate the-x. To do that, divide both sides by 3. What do you get?
OpenStudy (zpupster):
it is better to multiply both sides by (-3)
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
No @lizzylou169 you multiply both sides by -3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Either way, you get the same answer.

You do not get the same answer
OpenStudy (anonymous):
3x/9=-81
OpenStudy (zpupster):
\[(-3)(x/-3) = 27(-3)\]
-3 cancels on left and -81 on right
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
@lizzylou169 Admit you made a mistake
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh so its 3x=-81 and x=-27?

@skullpatrol How about instead of worrying about my mistakes, you help @DolfanFan. All I was doing was trying to help.
OpenStudy (zpupster):
not quite,
you are left with x on right and -81 on left.
x=-81
the principal is what ever you do to one side of the equation you do the same to the other side.
so we are trying to isolate x that is why we are mult. both sides by -3
