An unconditioned stimulus is something in the environment that naturally causes us to react, in some kind of way. For example, if a balloon were to pop right in your face, you would probably blink, and flinch. This is a natural reaction. And natural reactions are called "unconditioned responses." The popping balloon is an "unconditioned stimulus." It naturally causes us to flinch, out of surprise and fear.
