What is y-3=3(x+1) in standard form of a perpendicular line that passes through (5,1)? What is the X-intercept?

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Are you asking for a perpendicular equation, finding the x-intercept or both?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

both

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

The easiest one is finding the equation, so the slope of the previous equation is 3, perpendicular means that it has a slope that is the negative reciprocal of the original. So the new slope is -1/3. And we are given points (5, 1) Now we have all the neccessary information and all we do is plug that into the point-slope formula. y-y1=m(x-x1)
