Did anyone read Romeo and Juliet ?
I read it (goes to throw up) and I don't get it. I need to know what similarities there are in our loyalty values compared to their, and some differences between the two. I also need examples from the play, but like I said I don't get the play. I was thinking about how the two families expected their children to carry on their feud and how we don't usually expect our children to follow in our footsteps in such drastic ways any more. Or maybe how their families wanted them to marry certain people when they didn't love them or weren't ready to marry, we don't do that either, usually. Help Please???? I DO NOT WANT YOU TO DO THIS FOR ME, I JUST NEED SOMEONE TO GET ME STARTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok? ;)
And yes if you can help me you will get a medal.
Ive read Romeo and Juliet like 5 times.
Can u help me????
Gotta go, will check this later. :)
Actually, the parents in Romeo and Juliet are less into the battle than the children are. Both sides have examples of the adults saying, "Don't worry about it..." but the youths are the hotheads. The best example is at the party when Lord Capulet restrains Tybalt and tells him that it does not matter if Romeo is at the party. So think about older and younger adults today? A late teen/young adult is more likely to be a hot head and rush in than an older adult. As for the arranged marriages, in Dominant American Culture (DAC), yes. World wide, that changes a lot. DAC has lots of separation between generations. In Japan, for example, there was a famous pop singer who was poised to make a lot that gave it all up for the family business.... as a priest! Peter Payne, an American expat living in Japan, talked about how that made the news there and family expectations are a very powerful and respected part of the culture. As you can see, the differences from now to the time of Romeo and Juliet are as much depending on location as anything else! Another thing to think about: American gangs. How close are the people in them? What will they do for one another? Do they fight other gangs over simple breaches in territory? While gangs are not the DAC, they are one place where we are more similar to R&J. And here is a reference to help with getting more info on the play: http://www.shmoop.com/romeo-and-juliet/ Oh, and one thing... you don't get the humor and puns in Shakespeare. Almost nobody does. They used OP English rules and sounds that no longer exist, so it is basically impossible for anyone other than a linguist that knows OP to get all of the jokes Shakespeare pulled off. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPlpphT7n9s
