n the original vote count, Bush was winning by a small number of votes. However, Florida law required a recount of votes in an election with such close results. When the deadline passed for the counties to recount their votes, state officials announced George Bush the winner. However, Gore argued that the recounts were not conducted properly and that it was unfair to stop the recount when larger counties hadn't finished reviewing the ballots.

The U.S. Supreme Court reviewed the decision of the Florida Supreme Court because George Bush believed that Florida should redo the election instead of a recount in some counties Al Gore believed that ordering a new recount after declaring a winner was unconstitutional Al Gore believed that Florida should redo the election instead of a recount in some counties George Bush believed that ordering a new recount after declaring a winner was unconstitutional

With such close results, including ballots not counted before, this recount could change the results. George Bush believed this violated election laws under the U.S. Constitution. He asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the situation.
