Collin wants to look for a pattern in his daily TV viewing habits. Every night, he logs the number of shows he watched on a graph. Is this an example of a discrete or continuous function? Explain.

OpenStudy (kropot72):

If the function is discrete, the data values must be integers.

OpenStudy (kropot72):

@yoyogators Does that help you to decide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes a little bit, if i have anything else ill let you know

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Conversely, if all the data values are integers the function is not continuous.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you tell if they are integers?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

An integer is a number that can be written without a fractional or decimal component. It is unlikely that Collin would use fractions of a show in his data (such as 2.33 shows). He would use integers such as 4, 3, 1, 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be discrete because the data does stop because he is making the data about how many tv channels he watches every night.

OpenStudy (kropot72):

It is a discrete function, the reason being that the number of shows watched each night must be recorded as an integer.
