!!! One Medal Question !!! - Give an example of a scientific question that could be investigated with an experiment. Then give an example of scientific question that could not be investigated in this way.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

@Kayne

OpenStudy (aaronq):

This can be, like, anything we can measure.. e.g. "How much CO2 does a certain plant uptake per hour?" I can't think of scientific question that cannot be answered with an experiment, because then, it wouldn't be a scientific question...

OpenStudy (kayne):

Hi @tanya. @thomaster and myself, we have already answered this question and @thomaster had rightly pointed out that the second question is dependent on the other. Please refer to your previous post: http://openstudy.com/users/tanya123#/updates/51f56157e4b0c8f6bc369ae1

OpenStudy (kayne):

"... is dependent on the first one."

OpenStudy (tanya123):

but how is it ? the first one is about carbon dioxide and the second is about thinking during sleep ?

OpenStudy (kayne):

yups

OpenStudy (tanya123):

so how are they linking pls explain !

OpenStudy (kayne):

"Well, if you take into account what's happening around you, for instance global warming, an intriguing scientific question could be: " Can macroalgal culture help mitigate the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?" The experiments would entail measuring the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the organism On the other hand for the scientific question which cannot be investigated in this way. What do you mean by that actually? One scientific question which would entail a completely different setup for investigation would be "Can people think during their sleep?" Maybe that would require the use of MRI and other stuffs to investigate the human behaviour during sleep. I hope it helps." That was my response to this question. So, the first scientific question I proposed was "Can macroalgal culture help mitigate the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?" So, this experiment would entail measuring the amount of carbon dioxide being sucked up by the organism. This would entail culturing the macroalgae in a synthetic environment providing the appropriate nutrients and other conditions. Now, a scientific question which cannot be addressed using such practices would be "Can people think during their sleep?" While the measurement of carbon dioxide is a quantitative analysis, the observation of the MRI pattern of the people's brains would be a qualitative analysis. In addition, the second investigation would require a completely different setup to what you would need for the investigation of the first scientific question.

OpenStudy (kayne):

@tanya123 let me know if it's okay now?

OpenStudy (tanya123):

thats all right although i still dot get it ! but thanks for spending the time for me :)

OpenStudy (kayne):

Sorry :S Let's see if someone else could help you out. @uri what do you think about this question?

OpenStudy (uri):

I'm not a Bio student @Kayne told yea D:

OpenStudy (kayne):

Oh yeah but what do you understand by the question?

OpenStudy (uri):

We have to give a scientific question which can be investigated with an experiment And then we have to give a scientific question which CANNOT be investigated in the way you experimented before :3
