|3x + 4| = -3

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

keep in mind that |3x + 4| really means +1(3x+4) AND -1(3x+4) so you'd end up with 2 values for "x"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know how to solve for the second x since I don't know what to do different. I know that one would be x = -7/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or I think so at least.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

what do you think is => -1(3x+4) if you expand it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand what you're asking, sorry.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

what is -1(3x+4) equals to? notice the -1 in front

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3x - 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jdoe0001, there aren't necessary two solutions here. Note that the left side is an absolute value, and the right side is negative.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

then -3x - 4 = -3 # for your next solution

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SithsAndGiggles Does that mean that there's no solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say so, since \(|x|\ge0\).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you, I was so confused on what to do when the right side was negative. xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks, both of you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you're welcome
