how do you simplify (6y)^-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since you have parenthesis around "6y", this means that the exponent, "-2", applies for both numbers. Follow this process: 1. ) Since you have a negative exponent, move 6y to the denominator. In other words, flip it. You will get 1/[(6y)^2]. Once you flip it, the exponent is no longer negative. 2.) As stated from before the exponent applies for both factors. So, you will get 1/(6^2)*(y^2). 3.) You can still simplify it to 1/)36y^2) Hope this helps!

Sorry about that. For step number 3, it's 1/(36y^2). That is also your answer.
