5+2i=x+yi

Just look at it. What two numbers could you replace x with and y with to make the left and right sides of that equation look exactly the same.

I just don't understand /:

You're going to laugh when you realize how easy this is. Pretend like I have an eraser. I erase the x and the y. What should I replace the x with and what should I replace the y with to make the right side of the = look exactly like the left side of the = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5+2 for x+y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You changed the x into a 5 and the y into a 2, right? So, x=5 and y=2. There's your answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg, haha thank you so much <3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about, (6+9i)(4-2i) do I just distribute?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remember... x and y both have to be real numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hx^2-10x+50=0, what do I do with the x?
