OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

So i have a question i have been wondering about, It's not for school or anything it's just something that's been on my mind. (Question Below.)

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

How is a heridatary disease passed down and stuff?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

I don't get it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is encoded in the genes and DNA of the person, usually.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Ya but how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's mostly a defect in the deoxyribonucleic acid, if you'll pardon my spelling.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If I am not mistaken..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or are you asking how it happens?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Ya like how is it passed on and stuff and how does it happen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so are you familiar with how babies are made?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you see how

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

I still don't get how its passed down tho

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is passed same ways facial traits are passed down

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

But how? Like my moms dyslexic and i am too, How does that happen?

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

The DNA is passed on..

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

Its in your genetic cod

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

*code

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Dyslexia is a difficult example because it's neurological and not necessarily genetic.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

How's the code passed on tho?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Essentially chromosomes are "broken up" into parts during meiosis (gamete formation), one from your mom and one form your dad fuse, and voila.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you get double the gene for each thing. but only one is dominant which you display the trait of

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Yep, you get 2 alleles (one from each parent), which are essentially different DNA sequences that have an effect on the final product (phenotypic traits)

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

So what ur saying is i get DNA from my mom and from my dad and then they mix and stuff happens?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

very crudely, yes. It's definitely more complicated than that.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Ya ik it is, I ain't the ripest apple in the bushel i had to think of a way to word it

OpenStudy (aaronq):

i didn't mean it like that :P

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Thanks for all the help guys. :)

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Lol

OpenStudy (aaronq):

np dude
