How many subsets does the set {1, 2, 3} have? 6 7 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6??

OpenStudy (uri):

I think it's 8..Why do you say 6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know i jsut added them

OpenStudy (uri):

Ah no We have to see how many sets we can make So, { } {1} {2} {3} {1,2} {,3} {2,3} {1,2,3}

OpenStudy (uri):

{1,3}*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thing uri is right. For each element in the set, there are two choices: either it can be in the subset or not. There are 2 choices for the first element, 2 choices for the second, and 2 for the third, so the answer is \(2^3\). In general, if you have a finite set with \(n\) elements, the number of subsets is \(2^n\).

ohhhh now i get it thanks
