multiply the second equation by 2 and then add the two equations term by term u'll get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and also the first equation must be in the same order as the second one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you walk me through it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you realize? do you need some more Explanation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here.i wrote it for you...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! i get it now, when i would do it i would get either (4,-7) or (-4,-7) that makes so much more sense now! thank you!

Your Welcome :)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

you could have also solved it by substitution... we were given that y = -2x - 1 so sub -2x - 1 in for y in the other equation.. x + y = 3 x + (-2x - 1) = 3 x - 2x - 1 = 3 -x -1 = 3 -x = 3 + 1 -x = 4 x = -4 now sub -4 in for x x + y = 3 -4 + y = 3 y = 3 + 4 y = 7
