Starting College, need class advise.
What's your question?
What is a great course for a Biology major to take for starting college
Chemistry
or Anatomy and Physiology
Are you general biology or do you have an emphasis in mind, such maybe going into molecular biology, microbiology, medical microbiology, etc.,
I am just doing this to meet requirements
Those are two very different pathways. Haha. But I think that you would benefit more from taking anatomy and physiology. Because both of those courses are required for admissions into medical school AND pharmacy school.
Difficulty?
But I hear from my biology major colleagues that it was tough. A lot of memorization and was not a breeze, but in fact required a lot of time.
Which would be a good start?
Well, you need anatomy to enroll into physiology. So start with anatomy. I know that some schools offer a joint course in which they teach anatomy and physiology together. But you need to check the medical school(s) or with your college councilor if they are transferable or only to give credit for a certain program, such as nursing program or a technician program.
I get classes and books free and college is also free for me
So ignore the costs
I want to make sure I do well, because if I dont I will lost that free goodies
Start with anatomy and physiology.
The beginning for ALL Bio courses is Introductory Biology I and II. Then, you can take one of these. In some colleges they tell you to take Chemsitry with or before Bio. Depends on your background and preparation. You will need at least a year of organic chem too. Abbot is right, you need at least: Anatomy, Human Physiology and if you have time, Biochemistry. All these courses will help you when you go to med school. You dont need a Bio major - but should take these courses anyway.
Thanks Preetha!
If in the USA: English 101, or 1 or whatever they call the first college English at your place. Followed by the second English. Why English? At some point, possibly soon, you will be asked to write a term paper, research paper, etc. The skills needed to properly produce a college level paper are in the English classes. It can be a bad idea if you delay your general ed classes because you find them boring. This can leave you in the position of needing skills to get a grade! Skills you will get in English. Intro to Philosophy or Logic is another good one. You are going into a hard science, research, critical thinking, evaluating sources, and so on will be a part of what you do. Where do they teach these skills directly? Parts of Philosophy. Sure, they teach some of it in the sciences. However, that will not be the main focus of those classes. If you develop these skills through philosophy, your ability to succeed in the sciences will be better. Assorted math. All the sciences, even biology, get you with a lot of math. So start it early and keep one math class on the books every semester so that you just progress through what you need at a natural pace. Math is one of those progressive sets of classes, so if you delay early math classes you may not be able to graduate on time! By taking math early, you just keep up and get done even if you need to start at a lower level class.
