Which of the following points lie in the solution set to the following system of inequalities?y x <= - 5y -x >= - 4 (-5, 2) (5, -2) (-5, -2) (5, 2)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which point makes BOTH inequalities true?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry the inequalities are written wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y <= x - 5 y >= -x - 4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which point makes BOTH inequalities true

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

does (-5, 2) make them both true?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you figure out if it makes them true? Sorry, I'm new at this

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the point we're checking is (-5, 2) so x = -5 and y = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahh ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you then replace every x with -5 and every y with 2 and simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That makes sense, hang on a sec let me see if I can figure it out now :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

alright

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-5, 2) is not correct, Am I right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes you are

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it (5, -2)?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you nailed it, (5,-2) is the only solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much for teaching me that! You are one of the best people on here! :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
