Problems with Chrome

zepdrix (zepdrix):

My OpenStudy page is constantly crashing while typing a response that contains LaTeX. This has only been going on over the last couple of days but it's so irritating. :( Was there some weird update recently? My junky little browser can't seem to handle the plugin for some reason...

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Perhaps a problem with the MathJax engine? It has different render modes too, so perhaps a sub mode may have gone wonky.

OpenStudy (preetha):

Anyone else seeing this in Chrome?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What kind of problems are you seeing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does this happen with other browsers? or just Chrome?

OpenStudy (uri):

No..I think my Chrome works fine..

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Just me? :o hmm weird.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

woops I shoulda resized that :3 lol

OpenStudy (uri):

@zepdrix Try installing chrome again? :)

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Pshhhhhhhhh

OpenStudy (uri):

*Runs away*

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

It started to happen to me just now... D: Helping is fun, but if the page crashes when you were just about to finish a long LaTeX job with a rather (ehem) beautiful explanation, that tends to dampen enthusiasm with helping... and feeds on frustration... But...stay cheerful anyway ^_^

OpenStudy (preetha):

Teren: What browser?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Chrome ^_^

OpenStudy (preetha):

PC? Just tried on a Chrome/Mac, and was working.

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

PC, yes. It seems to happen when LaTeX is involved... maybe it's picky by who it picks to affect? XD It dares not taunt thee... ^_^

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

It might have only been a coincidence though. ^_^ It's only happened three times...

OpenStudy (preetha):

Hmmm. Is it working now?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

It's not something I can test... I only speculate that the trigger is doing something on LaTeX. While that seems to be the case, so far, no crashes :)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Let's test it! With a (ehem) beautiful explanation on how \[\Large 1 + \frac12 + \frac14 + \frac18....\]is in fact equal to 2. Let \[\Large x = 1 + \frac12 + \frac14 +\frac18...\] Let's double it. \[\Large 2x = 2 + 1 + \frac12 + \frac14 + \frac18...\] And subtract 2 from both sides... \[\Large 2x - 2 = 1 + \frac12+\frac14 + \frac18...\] and the right=side is once again equal to the original x... as it has been defined... \[\Large 2x - 2 = x\] Solving for x yields: \[2x-x = 2\]\[\Large x = 2 \] And that proves it!

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

ohh... it crashed as soon as I hit 'post' interesting XD EXCELLENT timing... that's what thinking positive gets me ^_^

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

So where exactly does it crash. When you hit post?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

If I could use teren's long entry as an example: For me it would have crashed mid typing, after a good amount of LaTeX was entered :o Maybe around the 4th latex entry. I've resolved to just type responses into text pad and copy/paste them over to the thread. A fine workaround for now :)

My version,"Version 29.0.1547.57", of the Chrome browser for Apple's OS, OSX 10.6.8, is completely unusable for rendering OpenStudy's LaTex. The br Attached is a composite screen capture of the results of the same LaTex text fed to FireFox 16.0.2 and Chrome "Version 29.0.1547.57", left to right respectively.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

In Windows I can right click any equation and get the settings for MathJax. I believe this is Option Key and Click on the Mac, but not 100% sure. You could try changing how the math is rendered.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

at times, using the chrome, i will get to the end or middle of a latex coding and have the "aw,snap" screen presents itself ..... very nerve racking

OpenStudy (ja1):

\(Test\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Refer to my comments in the fourth posting above. The LaTex code generation is provided by Mathematica's "Copy as", "LaTex" mouse facility. The most current rendering by the Google Chrome browser cannot deliver a/b . Refer to the attached screen snap shot taken a few minutes ago. By the way, that has not always been the case with earlier Chrome versions for the IMac.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@robtobey Does it also happen on the MathJax page too? http://www.mathjax.org/demos/tex-samples/ If so, yes, it is a browser based issue. MathJax uses a JavaScript plugin to do the work. JavaScript can fail for a number of reasons. Firewalls, other filter software that is taking over the JS engine, issues in the browser itself, and machine/browser security settings to name a few.

\[\left [ - \frac{\hbar^2}{2 m} \frac{\partial^2}{\partial x^2} + V \right ] \Psi = i \hbar \frac{\partial}{\partial t} \Psi \]
