Indicate whether the line PQ is parallel, perpendicular or neither to a line with a slope of -3. P (2, 5), Q (5, 6)

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Find the slope first

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

\[m= \frac{y2-y1}{x2-x1}\]

OpenStudy (uri):

Hey soos,Put the brackets too \[m =\frac{ (y2-y1) }{( x2-x1) }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@uri i did that and got 1/3

OpenStudy (uri):

6-5 ---- 5-2 1/3 Right..

OpenStudy (psymon):

Right, that's what you should get. So 1/3 is your slope of that line. So, parallel lines have the same slope, which of course this isn't -3. But perpendicular slopes are what they would call negative reciprocals of each other. By negative reciprocal, that means you change the sign and then flip the number upside down. So for -3. Changing the sign means positive 3. Flipping it upside down means making it 1/3. So since 1/3 is the negative reciprocal of -3, they are perpendicular lines.

OpenStudy (psymon):

Didn't see you typing @uri x_x

OpenStudy (uri):

I know it wasn't appearing.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

The user asked for uri so I just butted out

OpenStudy (uri):

@Luigi0210 nononononono you explain.

OpenStudy (psymon):

Ignore me then xD

OpenStudy (uri):

I'm out!

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

@uri this is your question now :3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you @Psymon that helped me a lot

OpenStudy (psymon):

Yeah, np :3
