Assume that all numbers are approximate. (A) estimate the result and (b) perform the indicated operations on a calculator and compare with the estimate. 3.64(17.06)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did for the estimate 4*15=60 or should it be 4*20=80 and then for the clculated i got 62.0984 what should that be rounded to? @loser66

OpenStudy (loser66):

Sorry, I don't get what you mean. what is the problem? where 4*15 or 4*20 come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a significant digit thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have to make an estimate result and then i have to calculate the actual problem

OpenStudy (loser66):

Can I see the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

estimate 3.64(17.06) calculate 3.64(17.06)

OpenStudy (loser66):

one more question: is it from chemistry class? If it is so, then you are right when you take the first number rounded to 4 and second one rounded to 20 However, if it is not from chemistry, you cannot rounded like that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its from technical mathmatics 1 class we have been doing alot of significant digits stuff and i wondering do we have to do it like that

OpenStudy (loser66):

@SithsAndGiggles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, I had that wrong. When you multiply, you round up to the least number of sig figs of the factors. In this case, it's 3, since 3.64 has three sig figs. So you'd round the product to 62.1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i have 61.1 now for the estimated is it 3*15 or 3*20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think 4*15 is good enough

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you
