OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there a difference between saying that a real number is positive and saying that a real number is nonnegative? Explain.

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

Yes! The ONLY difference is ZERO! Zero is a non-negative real number and it is not positive! :) Got it? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :) thanks! i thought it was zero, but wasn't sure if it was considered a positve number.

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

:)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

zero is neither positive nor negative

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

So yes, there a difference between saying that a real number is positive and saying that a real number is nonnegative and the difference is 0, but that doesn't mean there is no difference.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

What you need to understand here is that 0 is "something" just like -1 or -2...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, thank you! :)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

You have no argument against negative numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, i don't think so...

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Show me -2 cows in a field?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

I can easily see 2 cows.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well now i know 0 isn't positive, but it is nonnegative. I think that was my only question...

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

This is a question that any logical mind must struggle with before truly understanding what numbers are in Mathematics...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. but i shall struggle with each question pertaining to the Mathematics :)
