Is The square root of a number x always less than x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think yes. For example the square root of 144 is 12 or the square root of 2304 is 48. So the square root of a number is less than the number itself.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok I think I get it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But if you multiply it, it could be higher than the original.

OpenStudy (dape):

No, think about what happens when the number x is less than 1. For example what is the square root of 1/2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes he's right, there are exeptions for everything.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Almost everything.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok I think I get it now

OpenStudy (dape):

Or 1/4 is easier. \(\sqrt{1/4}\)=\(\sqrt{1}/\sqrt{4}=1/2>1/4\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well yes
