You can either factorize by completing the square and look how it's shifted (this is easiest). Or if you know calculus you can find the minimum/maximum and see which x this is.

The point is that you want to change the form from \(x^2+2x+1\) (or another 2-degree polynomial) to a form \((x+a)^2\). If you expand \((x+a)^2\) you see that we get a term \(2xa\). So \(a\) should always be half of the coefficient of the original linear x term (the single x). What is half of the coefficient of the linear term for \(x^2+2x+1\)?
