The image obtained with a converging lens is upright and 3 times the length of object. From my answer, Why magnification is negative !? the image should be virtual image. From wikipedia, "real images, M is negative and the image is inverted. For virtual images, M is positive and the image is upright."

Image is indeed virtual.. the image is found behind the lens...

and besides.. the signs depend on the system u are using there are two sign conventions a) Gaussian sign conventions.. in this Virtual image distances are negative, and concave radii of curvatures are negative and virtual image magnifications are negative b) Cartesian sign conventions.. in this. it doesn't matter whether the image or object is real or virtual.. here the direction of the incoming ray is positive and everything else negative, also .. in both the distances are always measured from the pole!
