write an algebraic expression "the sum of 11 and the product of 2 and a number r"

OpenStudy (debbieg):

If I said, "the sum of 11 and x", what would you write?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+11

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Good. Now, if I said, "the product of 2 and r", what would you write?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2r im not sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2r im not sure

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Well, that's right - product is just muliplication, and 2r means "2 x r" So you have that the product of 2 and r is 2r. You know that the sum of 11 and {something} is 11 + {something} So can you put all that together, and write an expression for "the sum of 11 and the product of 2 and a number r"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no thats what i dont know how to do put it all together

OpenStudy (debbieg):

@jenny01462 re-read what I wrote above and everything you've done. You're letting yourself be intimidated by this because you know it's "math". :) I'm telling you, you got this! Just put them together. The sum of 11 and {something} is 11 + {something} Your {something} in this case is the product of 2 and r, which as you told me, is 2r. I have faith! Try it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11+2r?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

YES!! See, I knew you could do it! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much

OpenStudy (debbieg):

You're welcome, happy to help. :)
