Adding fractions, help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The problem is -2/15 + 5/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To add fractions, you simply must find the common denominators for the denominators. Once you find the LCD, you can multiply your fractions with your new LCD.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here's my work: 5/6 - 2/15 Common Denominator: 30 5/6 * 5/5= 25/30 2/15 * 2/2= 4/30 25/30 + 4/30 = 29/30 = - 29/30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What have I done wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here's my work: 5/6 + 2/15 **** Common Denominator: 30 5/6 * 5/5= 25/30 2/15 * 2/2= 4/30 25/30 + 4/30 = 29/30 = - 29/30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, messed up there!

hero (hero):

Since when does 29/30 = -29/30 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's rights

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You did it right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because I was told when adding a positive fraction to a negative one, find the answer and at the end add a negative sign in front of it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good for you!:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that not true?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well true

hero (hero):

So @YoshinTown and @Ashja how come it is not 25/30 - 4/30 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess it's right. Sorry if I'm not that much help. I haven't done math all summer! I calculated myself and got the same answer as you ! It should be correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can't switch the fractions around hero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup my brain just exploded, someone please explain

hero (hero):

@YoshinTown, whatever you calculated, it isn't correct. I wish you would cease talking for a minute so that I can help @Ashja

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh sorry...

hero (hero):

If you had something like -2 + 5 Couldn't you re-write it is 5 - 2 ? If so, why wouldn't you be able to do it with fractions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually th e answer is wrong. When your at -4/30+25/30, the -4 and 25 are like integers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So then it would be 21/30

hero (hero):

Now you're just giving answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But don't forget that you have to reduce so then your answer will be 7/10

hero (hero):

@YoshinTown, you are being very rude.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm just explaining

hero (hero):

You didn't explain anything.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why?:(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Some people do this in openstudy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well you didn't explain that much! Your being kinda rude

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I feel sad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry

hero (hero):

That's because I was too busy trying dealing with you to help anyone. You kept telling me that what I was saying was wrong. Clearly \[\frac{5}{6} - \frac{2}{15} = \frac{25}{30} - \frac{4}{30} = \frac{21}{30} = \frac{7}{10}\] And yes, addition of fractions are commutative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I didn't mean to say that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I didn't mean your answer was wrong, I meant mines or the girl who needed help
