American soldiers played a decisive role in WWI, though the French and British would rather die today than admit this. When the US entered the war the Russians were quitting it, allowing the Germans to move most of their forces to the Western Front. The Germans tried in the spring of 1918 to use this new strength to win the war before the US could get its entire army to France. Early-arriving US troops helped halt this massive win-the-war offensive, then went over to the attack. It was the arrival of this fresh, feverishly combative new army into the fray that convinced the Germans they could never win, and everyone knew and acknowledged this at the time. Today "respected" British historians such as Niall Ferguson write thick books, crammed with graphs and charts to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the US had nothing to do with it, and might as well have stayed home.

The U.S. was in the war though because they entered after Germany sank a ship that had Americans on it... I think it was the Lusitania
