Which of the following statements says that a number is between -5 and 5? |x| > 5 |x| < 5 |x| = 5 C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it is |x| = 5 (C) good job :D

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Noooo.....

OpenStudy (debbieg):

|x|=5 means only that x=5 or x=-5

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Remember what absolute value means. It is DISTANCE FROM 0. so what does it mean to say that a number is between 5 and -5, e.g., that -5<x<5 ?? It means that it is WITHIN 5 units of 0.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

So then it's absolute value (read: distance from 0) is.... which....? >5 or <5?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Contrast "it's between -5 and 5" to "it's either less than -5 or greater than 5", which would mean that it is NOT within 5 units of 0, that is, it is MORE THAN 5 units away from 0. In which case, it's absolute value (read: distance from 0) is.... which....? >5 or <5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2ND ONE ....-5<X<5
