Which word in the sentence is a direct object? The adult hippopotamus drinks 50 gallons of water each day. A. gallons B. hippopotamus C. day
What word in the sentence relates directly to the subject.
gallons of water
It would be hippopotamus because in the sentence they aren't talking about the amount of water the hippo drinks, they are talking about the hippopotamus, thus, the hippopotamus is the direct object. :)
@Madds96 Look at: http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/subject.htm and http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/directobject.htm The question is on the direct object, not the subject.
That is very true. I'd say it is gallons then. For some reason my brain was wanting to say that the subject was the direct object. Thank you for pointing that out to me! :)

Gallons. A direct object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of a "transitive verb" in an active sentence or shows the result of the action. It answers the question "What?" or "Whom?" after an action verb. http://www.englishlanguageguide.com/grammar/direct-object.asp
