OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the value of the coefficient of "a" when the quadratic equation y = (3x + 1)(3x − 2) is written in standard form? −2 −3 9 6

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i think its is B

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think i am not sure

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Use FOIL on $$\huge y = (3x + 1)(3x − 2) $$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait be right back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i think it is A

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you should multiply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(3x + 1)(3x − 2) FOIL method

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like the person above wrote..so start 3x(3x)+1(3x)+.. keep going and recall that the number in front of the \[x^2 \] is your a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so remember the way quadratics are written are in this standard form: y=\[ax^2+bx+c\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

goodluck, keep going! you are almost at your desire answer !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it D

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it is D, then why is it so?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

You need to do these questions on your own during the test.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just guessing

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Stop guessing and start trying to learn how to do it on your own.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

OpenStudy values the Learning process - not the ‘Give you an answer’ process - guide the asker to a solution.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Learning to "teach yourself" is a skill that no school teaches.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Come on you are almost there! Look here is an example of foil : if you have for example y=(x-1)(2x-5) then when you foil, then you get this==> (x)(2x)+(x)(-5)+(-1)(2x)+(-1)(-5) now you try with your problem! Goodluck, the best way to get the answer is to try it! You can post your work and we can help you see if you made any mistakes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait i will be right back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes we can wait to see your work.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it C i think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello can i have yes ur right or something

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Can you explain how you got that? Just explain what you did to arrive at that answer... all you need to do is ONE PART of FOIL. I showed you how to FOIL yesterday here: http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/521dd344e4b0750826e07361 And it was explained again above.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there not the same

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

What is not the same?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

?? The problems?? Of course not. But the way you FOIL is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what ?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Multiply the first terms of the binomials please $$\huge (3x + 1)(3x-2)$$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9x

OpenStudy (debbieg):

almost.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

\(3x\cdot 3x\) = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9

OpenStudy (debbieg):

No, you were closer before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah 9x
