Houston has been hired as a salesman. He is paid a flat rate of $515 each week and earns an additional $17.50 commission for each sale. If x represents the number of sales and y represents the total earn, which equation will help Houston determine the amount he earns in one week? a. y = $515h - $17.50 b. y = $17.50h - $515 c. y = $515h + $17.50 d. y = $17.50h + $515

Do you have a guess?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i have no idea about this problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. Which amount is fixed? Which amount depends on sales?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Also, did you think about what "earns an additional $17.50 commission" means? It can help eliminate choices!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK, one question at a time. Which amount depends on sales?

OpenStudy (psymon):

You meant to write x or h? Im guessing h in your answer choices is what we mean x to be, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk i just copied and pasted the instuctions.

OpenStudy (psymon):

Well then lets assume that h is actually x just to make things match up. Now it says flat rate of $515. What this means is that no matter what, Houston is earning $515. For each sale, he gets $17.50. Because $515 is constant no matter what, we don't want $515x. We'd be multiplying and changign something thats not supposed to change! Now it also said that x represents the number of sales. So per sale is $17.50 and if you sell x items, you geta total amount of $17.50x. So in total, this would give you what? : )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because 515 is the flat rate, that number should not be multiplied by anything so you can eliminate a and c right away.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B!

OpenStudy (psymon):

Now B is a subtraction of $515. He is being paid $515. If you'rebeing paid, youre certainly not going to write down - $515 on any record keeping you're doing xD He is PAID$515 EARNS $17.50 per sale. Youre making money each time, youre all positive positive positive : )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D? :/

OpenStudy (psymon):

Yep, absolutely.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AAAHH! thank you thank you thank you!
