Help: Solve for x, equation is in the comments

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use www.wolframalpha.com. it will solve for you.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

since \(x\ne0\), you can multiply both sides of the equation by \(3(x^2-x)^{1/3}\). Then solve the resulting simplified equation.

OpenStudy (debbieg):

I think wolfram is a great tool, either for checking the solution that you arrive at, or sometimes for getting some "intuition" about the function or problem. BUT, it is not a substitute for understanding equation-solving techniques. If the equation is one that a student might be expected to be able to solve without technological aid, then it is important that they be able to do that, and not just always resort to technology. I give exams in Algebra 1 & 2, Trigonometry, and Business Calculus where I do not allow the students to have even a graphing calculator, so that they can demonstrate that they understand the underlying concepts. Just something to keep in mind. :)

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

@DebbieG - well said. :)

In my university they do not allow us to use any calculators in some exams even they have very hard questions to solve in the given time. I think it is unnecessary to solve "complex problems" without calculators.

Although this question is not very complex and can be solved under one minute. But it is not creative and does not teach you anything.
