Perpendicular lines Help? (Algebra)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"What is the slope of the line passing through the point (4, −2) and perpendicular to the line y = 4x + 2?" Please explain how I would find the perpendicular line...I dont understand hwo to do this.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You should have this rule. Generally , given two slopes, m and n, they are perpendicular if m*n = -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooohhh alright...... soooo would that make the answer... -1/4 ??

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

That's the slope. Now, how about the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use point slope formula \[(y - y _{1}) = m(x-x _{1})\] you already have a point, a slope, plug it into the point slope formula and solve for y
