OK, so does everyone agree that China is in its Golden Age? If you don't, say why and put a country that you think is. Thanks!

It's sort of in a golden age if you're talking industry and business. In the last twenty or so years, China went from being a largely agrarian and third-rate economy to the second largest economy in the world, surpassing Japan with only the US at the top. Back in the 80s and 90s, many thought of China as little more than a communist backwater where cheap shirts were made. Now they're where many of the world's electronics are manufactured with cities like Shanghai looking like New York from a distance.

But whether it can sustain that is another argument -- some think that it's a bubble rife with corruption and political issues. But others are convinced that China's growth, while it might have bumps along the way, is going to continue at a steady pace.

Oh ok but I'm not only talking about business and industry, I'm talking like basically everything about it. Like its economy, government, even like art and intellectual innovations. @Captain_Page_Turner

With everything else, I'd find it harder to argue that it's in the kind of Golden Age that sees improvements across the board in every field. So if you're looking for something to fit that definition in a strict sense, I'd say no.

China's growth is pretty amazing, but it comes at the cost of those that can't make the most of it. Sure, there are more cars and opportunities for financial growth, but there are also a lot of underlying issues.

The gap between rich and poor is accelerating, the country's political power remains in the grip of a select few (and the system is rife with corruption though they say they are trying to fight it), their human rights record is terrible, and they're also struggling with severe environmental issues (tons of the world's discarded electronics end up over there for either recycling or in one of the villages-turned-landfills).

Wow thanks i guess China really isn't in it's Golden Age after all. What country/society do you think could possibly be in it's Golden Age? My first choice was Canada, but i wasn't too sure. @Captain_Page_Turner

that would be a very diverse thing to say though because no country is truly in the golden age every country has its own problems along with good things

If you can support an argument for Canada, that could be an interesting choice. Picking one is tough today because of the global recession -- every country was hit by it to some degree. For Canada, though, it's like the neighbor in the north that no one doesn't like and they're doing okay.

There are also a few other countries that might be considered in the same vein, such as Norway or Australia. It's just up to you as to why you think the country you pick is the one that works -- there's no real right or wrong answer here, I think.
