I am writing a summary of a chapter from one book for my master's course, but I am not very proficient at APA style just yet. I am fine with the reference page, just not sure about citing within the text if it all comes from just one source.

In-text citing in APA.

Direct quotes: (Lastname, year, p. number or para. number or pp. page range)
Paraphased material: (Lastname, year)

If you have a source and you are paraphrasing from various parts or pages of the source just use (Lastname, year) at the end of the paraphrased material. If you have directly quoted several instances throughout the source, each quote needs to be cited with the correct page numbers for each quote, or better yet, see if you can take some or most of the quotes and paraphrase them into a single paragraph that you only need to cite with the last name and year. Keep in mind that instructors will usually only allow a certain percentage of your paper to be quoted.

Sorry! One more thing...this is an edited book. Each chapter has a different author. Who's last name do I use? On the reference page, the editor's name is listed, not the chapter author.

For each chapter you will need a separate entry. It should list the author and the editor. Here is an example:

Plath, S. (2000). The unabridged journals. K. V. Kukil (Ed.). New York, NY: Anchor.

I take that back. You can use one reference page entry, but use all authors names. Sorry about that. Just double checked.

Here is a better example that also deals with chapters.

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year of publication). Title of chapter. In A. A. Editor & B. B. Editor (Eds.), Title of book (pages of chapter). Location: Publisher.

When you use the chapter reference remember the chapter is in regular font and the title of the book is italicized.
