factor 6x^2+x-12=?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

What two numbers when \(\sf \color{red}{multiplied}\) = 72, but whose \(\sf \color{green}{sum}\) = 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm that's what I got stuck on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 6(x+?)(x-?)

OpenStudy (abb0t):

That's not correct. Thikn about it! What two numbers when multiplied gives you -72?? Here are your choices of numbers: 1, 2,3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 14, 24.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Two of those numbers multiplied = -72. and also, when you ADD those two numbers, they give you +1 You can do this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not -72 its -12

OpenStudy (abb0t):

You have a 6 in front! You need to take that number into account, so you multiply -12 and 6!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok but you don't have to be rude

OpenStudy (abb0t):

You will have: 6x\(^2\)+ __?__x - __?__x -12 = 0 You are solving for ^ and ^

OpenStudy (abb0t):

So that you can factor into groups!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i got it thank you

OpenStudy (abb0t):

HINT: part of your answer is \(\sf \color{red}{3x-4}\). You can figure the other one out
