If a liter of water is heated from 20ºC to 50ºC, what happens to its volume? The volume decreases. The volume increases. The volume first increases, then decreases. The volume first decreases, then increases.

This is a tricky question, lets go with what we know. We know that the boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius. This question says water is heated from 20ºC to 50ºC so we know that the water is not boiling so for now forget about evaporation. When substances are heated they generally expand as they get warmer, this is true for all their states (solid, liquid, gas). The substance water is an exception to this pattern because water takes up more space as a solid than as a liquid. So water does the opposite of most materials. My explanation isn't that great sorry I cannot seem to word it right...
