How do I find potential difference?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Can you elaborate?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have some physics hw and was wondering if there is a formula but I have a thorough question :The potential difference between a storm cloud and the ground is 1.9 × 10^8 V. If a bolt carrying 1 C falls from a cloud to Earth, what is the magnitude of the change of potential energy of the charge? Answer in units of J

I looked through my notes and saw v=IR but I don't think that applies

Give me a few minutes and I'll come back to this one...eating :)

No prob thanks!

Ok, here's how you'd calculate it: \[\Large \Delta PE = q_0\Delta V = (1C)(1.9x10^8V)=1.9x10^8J\]This formula should be in your book somewhere. This one just happens to work out easily since it's only 1C :)

Thanks!

np :)
