Solve -4x - 5 > -9 and describe the graph of the solution help please!!!!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

First let's isolate x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-4x - 5 > -9 -4x - 5+5 > -9+5 ... Add 5 to both sides. -4x > -4 -4x/(-4) < -4/(-4) .. Divide both sides by -4 (notice the sign flips). x < 1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let me know if that makes sense, if so, then we'll move onto the graph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so will that be an open or closed graph

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

there is no line under the inequality sign, so you exclude the endpoint

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you show this with an open circle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you'll do this step 1) draw a number line step 2) plot an open circle at 1 step 3) shade to the left of the open circle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank u so much i have another question if you can help\

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok -2y - 7 > 11 Part 1: Solve the inequality above. Part 2: Describe the graph of the solution.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

show me what you got so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok -2x -7+7 > -11+7; simplify i think

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so far so good

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

btw you have x instead of y, but it's no big deal really (silly typo)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2x > -2 ; divide by -2 and switch the sign

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wrong one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2x -7+7 > -11+7; simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then -2x-7+7>-11+7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

switch the sign then -4x/-2 < -2/-2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hmm that's a bit off

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

here's what you should get

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-2y - 7 > 11 -2y - 7+7 > 11+7 -2y > 18 -2y/(-2) < 18/(-2) y < -9

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'll let you handle the graph portion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i get where i messed up thank you but i have another ???

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok last one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok 16 < 3x + 1 < 4 Part 1: Solve the inequality above. Part 2: Describe the graph of the solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

are you sure that's 16? or is it -16?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 16

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

isolate x to get 16 < 3x + 1 < 4 16-1 < 3x + 1-1 < 4-1 ... Subtract 1 from all sides. 15 < 3x < 3 15/3 < 3x/3 < 3/3 ... Divide all sides by 3. 5 < x < 1 since it's impossible for a number to be both larger than 5 AND smaller than 1 at the same time, the statement 5 < x < 1 is always false so 16 < 3x + 1 < 4 is always false

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so thats it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, there are no solutions

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

because 16 < 3x + 1 < 4 is false

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok i get it now thank you so much jim you really helped alot ;)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome, I'm glad to be of help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:) YOUR THE BEST

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

thanks, hopefully you'll be able to do the rest with what you learned here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YES I WILL THANKKKKK UUUUUU
