write 853,000 as scientific notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8.53 x 10^5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8.53 × 10^5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you need help understanding why that's the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Each place value in a number is a power of ten; you know.., the 10's place 100's place, 1000's place, etc.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

With me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And the same is true for decimal places... tenths place, hundredths place, thousands place etc.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So scientific notation is a short cut for writing really big numbers with lots of 0's aka lots of 10's places that we don't want to write out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok that's why it has to whatever power?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so for a number like 123000... instead of writing all that out, we can simplify it to a small number.. traditionally a single digit... 1.23 and multiply it by 10 to the power of how many "10s places" it actually is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what would 123000 be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and yes, that's why it has whatever power
