Can someone please help me understand this passage from "Canto I"?
I've been re-writing the poem "Canto I" by Ezra Pound, and my assignment is to re-write it so that the poem is easier to read. I've been doing ok so far but I reached a passage that I don't understand whatsoever. What do you think these sentences mean? :/ Came we then to the bounds of deepest water, To the Kimmerian lands, and peopled cities Covered with close-webbed mist, unpierced ever With glitter of sun-rays Nor with stars stretched, nor looking back from heaven Swartest night stretched over wretched men there. The ocean flowing backward, came we then to the place Aforesaid by Circe.
(I re-wrote it a bit more easily) They went to deep waters. a misty city with lots of people. no sun, and no stars, from above is a dark night over the people. The drift of the waves is opposite of the people, then they reached (That place) ( They were sailing and reached somewhere)
Thank you, that really helped me out.
