Joe and Jane have a combined age of 42 years. If Joe's age is 1/2 of Jane's, how old is Jane in years? Is it 28?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, your answer is correct. Jane is 28 years old.

thanks guyssss

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you're welcome :)

OpenStudy (atlas):

The best way to do would be to assume Joe's age to be x Now since the age of Joe and Jane combined is 42 -> Jane's age would be 42-x

OpenStudy (atlas):

Now Joe's age is half of Jane So 2* Joe's age = Jane's age or, 2x = 42-x You can solve for x to get Joe's age

Thanks a bunch @atlas the way i did it was backsolving.

Yeah I know but this is a safer method and will work everytime even in more complex questions
