Find the values of x and y. (Could someone explain this to me?) A. x = 22, y = 68 C. x = 90, y = 68 B. x = 68, y = 22 D. x = 90, y = 22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope you can tell those are degrees..

OpenStudy (yttrium):

Do you know the identities of isosceles triangles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought x would =90 because the triangle is at 90 degrees.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a triangle with 2 equal sides if thats what you mean.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

..i still need help with this..

OpenStudy (yttrium):

Yes. It is true that x = 90 because of perpendicularity. Let me tell you one more characteristic of isosceles, their base angles are also equal. Now, can you solve for y now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=90 y=68

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (yttrium):

No. :)

OpenStudy (debbieg):

The 3 angles of a triangle always sum to 180 degrees.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 180-90 ?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

No.... you are leaving out the other angle. :)

OpenStudy (debbieg):

There are 3 angles... so if you know 2 of them, you know the 3rd. Sum the measures of the 2 that are known, and then subtract that from 180.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what the hey... a report abuse button just popped up?? ...anyways you add up both those angles and then subract them from 180 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i would get 22 right ?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Yes. Or to simplify it - when you know that ONE angle is a right angle (90 degrees), then the other 2 angles must add up to 90 degrees. So just subtract the one non-right angle measure from 90 degrees.

OpenStudy (yttrium):

@HendersonNeedsYurHelp 2y =180-( 2*68), then. Therefore what is y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=22 yttrium

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks guys :) i get it now!

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Right. :)
