Which of these is the domain and range for the parent linear function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it's A but I am not quite sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi?

OpenStudy (phi):

what is the parent linear function ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it doesn't have one. can you not see the attachment?

OpenStudy (phi):

that attachment shows the choices but not the question.. what function are they talking about ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess it's more like a definition.

OpenStudy (phi):

if they mean a generic linear function (which is a line) a line has all real numbers for its domain and range. but some lines don't. Example: x=1 has only 1 as its domain

OpenStudy (phi):

maybe they mean y= x as the "parent" linear function and y= x^3 as the parent cubic function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, It's strange. Which answer choice would you go with?

OpenStudy (phi):

the domain are all "legal" x values the only time you get "illegal" x values are if you divide by 0 so for example 1/x would not allow x=0 (divide by 0 not allowed) and the domain is all real numbers except 0 Also illegal is to take the square root of a negative number for y= x there are no illegal x's so the domain is all real numbers it should be obvious that if y equals x, y can be all real numbers also

OpenStudy (phi):

so the range ( y values) of y=x is all real numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it's A? Domain: All real numbers Range: A;; real numbers
