solve x- 5/x =4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did u get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah very confusing, I plugged it in the calculator but the answer isn't 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

simple you just subtract 4 because basically x=4 correct ? and so you plug 4 into x and it would be 4-5=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that what your trying to solve for ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no its like x- (5/x) =4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does the whole question ask ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve that equation :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does it have a number to put for x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

never mind i know how to do this so what you have to do is combine like terms as in both of the xs together x=-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then? im so confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First, let's work on the left hand side of your equation, the x- 5/x This means, for instance, to see if it can be simplified at all. To divide 1 by x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is 1x -5/1x do you get it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeahh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then after you combine like terms you simple try and get x alone

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know how to get x alone

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x ^{2} -5=4\] simple add 5 to both sides then you have 9 \[x^{2}= 9 \] \[\sqrt{9} which would be x=3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which i dont get how you got 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no that cant be right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1) What happens if you multiply everything by x? 2) What is the quadratic equation? \[x - \frac{5}{x}=4\] \[x^2−5=4x\] \[x^2−4x−5=0\] Now solve using the quadratic equation! Quadratic Equation: \[\frac{-b}{2a} \pm \sqrt{\frac{b^2-4ac}{2a}}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you trying to the quadratic equation ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im still not getting the right answer!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a = 1 b = -4 c = -5 You can verify your answers by plugging the result back into the original equation (Hint: one of the two possible solutions is -1) Hope that helps :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got -1 and 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:S

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is correct :) \[-1 - \frac{5}{-1} = 4\] \[5 - \frac{5}{5} = 4\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yay :D thanks!
