Would using a graduated cylinder or a spring scale be more precise in finding the volume of a regular solid?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

how would you use a scale to find the volume of something?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not entirely sure.. I just know they use it because supposedly the volume of an object varies depending on how close or far away that object is from the equator.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

we'll scales measure mass, not volume, so you've heard wrong.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

technically, they measure weight, but most of the time people use those interchangeably.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You will have to explain to me how the volume varies at the equater

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure @aaronq ? My chem teacher is the one who asked the question

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yeah. you can put a kilogram of cotton and a kilogram of iron on a scale and they will weight the same, but their volume will be very different.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh. alright, thanks. I'll have to ask him more about it tomorrow.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he is right about the scale measuring mass and you can use the cylinder to measure volume. you can use both of them together to find density.
