What is 29.25 rounded to the nearest one? What is 29.25 rounded to the nearest ten?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know the rules for rounding?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is in the one place? what is in the tens place?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when rounding, any number that youre trying to round to, if it is 5 or higher, you round the number to the left of it up one. if it is 4 or lower, the entire number stays the same

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So with that information - what is the value in the ones place? ten place?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in this case, 29.25 to round to the nearest tenth, (the tenth place being the 2 in .25) we look at the 5, since its a "5 or higher #" we round the number to the left of it up one number, so it becomes 29.3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Tessa_Mae - be careful that is not correct...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rounding to nearest one 29.25 the 9 is in the one place. so look at the number to the right of it - which is a 2. This is smaller than 5 so we leave it, thus the answer is 29

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@levie I would like you to tell me what value is in the tens place...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i said tenths place, not ones

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30.00

OpenStudy (anonymous):

using it as an example to see if they understood the concept and could try to find the answer to their question on their own

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes that is correct, do you understand the concept @levie ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thank both of you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JuanitaM what i said was correct. i was giving an example. not giving away the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Tessa_Mae the reason I wanted you to caution was that I asked what was in the tens and in the one place...putting "tenth" in your example could confuse someone if they are really just learning basic concept. Maybe a suggestion to you would be to use a bigger whole number and stay on the left side of the decimal until you are confident that they understand the basics first. Yes, I saw exactly what you were doing...but maybe Levie did not and would think your "tenth" answer was her "ten" answer....That is all! Happy studies to all

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is why i put in parentheses ( the 2 in .25) just to clarify what i meant by the word "tenth" to avoid confusion, but i appreciate your concern, have a nice day. @JuanitaM
